Design of the Week : Bringing Personality to a Drab Open Space

February 28, 2024

Hiya kittens ! Welp, it’s been a bit crazy around here and I’m afraid our schedule has taken a toll 😔
I’m actually going to be putting the blog on hold for a little bit while I tinker with the website so things will be pretty quiet around here until the dust settles – but I wanted to leave you for now with a little something so … it’s design time, woot woot ! Another fantastic project just wrapped up so I am very excited to share the final look and give you a little behind the scenes walkthrough !

Welcome to a classic case : we have a big open space that needs to contain the living room area, a dining room set-up and the kitchen, which can be a tall order ! My client already had a TV mounted and two main storage pieces that she wanted to keep, but her living room arrangement wasn’t ideal : she had a straight sofa facing the TV but it was floating around the room and disturbing the flow, making it hard to have extra seating that felt functional. The solution : re-arrange things to optimize the space, making a very visual separation of each area of the room, along with your new best friend : the corner sofa !

Check it out : with this new layout, we now have a big dining area with a round table and four chairs, along side a sexy bar by the kitchen, and the living room can accommodate more people along with offering a super cozy lounge for TV viewing, it’s a win-win !
Not to mention she had an extra need for a Peloton spot, which we managed to fit in without overstepping on either area.
The back of the sofa creates a visual separation that’s pleasing to the eye, but since it’s a sectional, it doesn’t feel like people have their back to you throughout the space, it’s more inclusive and you can have fun with it, like jump over it to get in, Starsky & Hutch style 😅
We also have very important kitties living in this house so I didn’t forget them, and put together a fun and furry climbing wall, that way they can supervise the new set up and live like royalty !

Onto the design ! My client is the funnest and we have so much style in common so I was delighted to put together not just one but two major gallery walls for this big space, along with a heavy dose of fun colors – it’s pop, but grown-up with a little dose of sexiness !
We’ve got pattern on pattern on pattern, and velvet as far as the eye can see, of course. Two of the rugs are washable and the sofa has performance fabric to repel those claws when the cats get the zoomies 😉

In the living room, the purple chair was pre-existing so I made sure to tie it into the new room by focusing on sexy jewel tones all over ! You can see we have a few call back “bubble” pieces like the two tables and the floor lamp, for a little added whimsy.

We are both all about leopard print, but since we had already incorporated classic leopard pattern fabrics in another room, we distilled it in this space to add some variety : an illustration in the gallery wall of the living room here, a rug there –
leaving the cats to be the main felines of this space – deservedly so !

And the final, important, touch is a little easy makeover of the kitchen. The cabinets couldn’t be painted over quite yet so instead, I suggested some stick-on tiles and changing up the hardware, it’s guaranteed to freshen up any space on a budget ! And of course, don’t forget sexy stools if you have the space !

So there you go ! Proof that no builder-grade space can resist the power of color and pattern and a little Velvet Jungle touch 😎
If you’re worried that your space can’t be saved, this is your sign : there is always hope ! (Hint, hint)

I’m Going Back To Bed : The Prettiest Headboards You Need to See

February 13, 2024

Oh beds, how I love you. I’m one of those “if I could sleep 24hrs a day, I would” types and always have been – I need my naps, “grasse matinées”, I work in my bed and my home theatre is set up right in front of it for the best seat in the house, – sorry guests !
It’s the coziest spot in the house and I take my pillows and sheets selection very seriously.

It me ! 👆
But in design, there is something even cooler than all that, and it’s the fabulous hat of the bed : the headboard ! I love a wild and funky headboard, as much as an elegant and sophisticated one : the only magic formula is go BIG ! It’s such a joyous touch, and can shape the whole feel of a room, so today I’m rounding up some of my favorite headboard designs ever to inspire you all to go big and then go home to sleep it off ! We’ve got wiggly shapes, velvet a-plenty, cool patterns, full walls, and even a little DIY action !
Get ready to rethink it all 🤩
