Kitchen Progress

October 17, 2016

In about two weeks I should be about ready to show you guys a for-reals, magical, before & after of the kitchen but there’s still much work to be done !
So far this weekend, among other things, I painted the walls and installed the floors, so I can give you a little peek at the progress.

Like I mentioned in the last post, the flooring and the paint so far cost me next-to-nothing.
I found this great checkered-look vinyl sheet flooring and it only cost me 31$ (!!!) to cover the amount I needed.

I’m a renter, and even though I won’t hesitate to make changes to a perfectly nice and clean apartment just because I need to live in a place that makes me happy, I’m still very mindful of the fact that once I leave, I need to put things back the way they were, (unless my landlord digs the changes).
To avoid damaging the original floors too much, I decided to only tape the vinyl around the edges, with double-sided tape. I made sure to get a cut of the vinyl exactly the length of the kitchen, in one big piece, so it won’t move. And just in case, it’ll be anchored by big heavy furniture !

The chalkboard paint that big home-improvement stores sell is usually unbelievably overpriced so I did some digging and found that Rustins paint in Blackboard Black was a fantastic option that covered very well with just one layer. I bought a 30 oz. can for 22$ on amazon and managed to cover 129 sq. ft. of wall with it. That’s insaaaane.
And I even have a few drops left for touch-ups !
(The frog tape I used totally let me down so the edges are pretty crappy. I’m gonna get back to them during the week as soon as I can. Damn you frog-tape, I trusted you.)

Alright, let’s do it to it ! Remember this sad and empty corner ?

Well here it is all dolled-up !

Oooooooh….

Aaahhhhhhhhhh ….

Isn’t it fabulous ?!

I’m so freakin’ happy with the changes. It’s already made the future nook much more inviting and cozy, but also totally dramatic and awesome ! I think the colors I picked out for the accessories are going to really pop on the black background.

I can’t wait to show you the other side of the kitchen where the magic is happening as we speak (but it’s very ugly magic and it’s currently piles of crap and dust everywhere…)
Come on back to check it out next Monday !
