Life After Wallpaper

January 18, 2017

Hey guys !

So sorry I’m late ! I was on a work site for the last two days and had zero time to post …
I’ve been a bit overbooked with new projects over the last months and as cool as that is for my business, my own home has suffered a nasty bout of neglect.
That doesn’t mean I haven’t meticulously planned everything in my head already but I haven’t had enough time (and money!) to buy, and install and paint and hang everything I want in here. The wallpaper was a big change and finally lit a fire under my ass to get things moving, sleep be damned!

Since that post, some things have evolved and I want to get you up to speed on where we are today.
So, let me introduce you to the all new toys in the house !

The chairs.

I found these gorgeous Balinese chairs second hand, 60$ for the pair. Although, since nothing in life is that easy, they were 1 hour from Paris (each way!), so I had to call on my brother once again (… sorry …). But they were lovely happy people and it was totally worth the trip !
These really spoke to me for extra seating around the coffee table. I love the exotic touch, and they can be folded which is unexpected and totally awesome for a small space. They’re also a low seat but with a back to rest on, which is not very common and very appreciated. I always love to sit on poufs around the coffee table when it’s an option, so I took to using these instantly even as the host ! Plus, it feels like a throne, I’m not gonna lie.

At the beginning of this project I decided to put all living room items on wheels to be able to move things around easily. I found some cute little gold wheels at the hardware store that I’ll be putting on the table, sofa and now these adorable chairs.

I have a secret hiding spot behind the couch where I can store them for more space, to be able to take them out for guests in a pinch, but for now I’m a bit in love with them so they’re staying out. I’m also going to work on making the wood a little lighter so some more DIY is in order. I do need to find some cool cushion fabric for the seats and so far it’s a bit of a puzzle. Mixing prints is comparable to a quadratic equation, people. It’s serious business.

The rugs.

I wasn’t crazy about the light floors, so I went and covered it all in shaggy Flokati rugs for some serious 70’s groove and a delightful feeling under bare feet ! I managed to cover almost 13’x9’ for 140$ which is quite a steal, and it adds hella texture which is a must in any interesting home. Plus, look how preeeetty !

I also received my beautiful Urban Outfitters Magic Thinking rug, as you may have spotted in the last home post. It’s amazingly perfect, overdyed, and a real statement.

And finally I’ve been on the lookout for a faux-zebra hide for-eeeever and I think I finally found the one, so fingers crossed for it to happen in the next few days ! After that I need to stop, as much as I love layered rugs it’s starting to be a lot, and I need to live with it for a while to re-assess the situation and see what works and what doesn’t.

The desk.

I bagged this gooooorgeous 60’s desk with star feet that you may have noticed on older pictures ! Sadly, it’s a little too small for my desk chair. But I ain’t no quitter ! This year’s about being creative so let’s create a new desk out of this old one instead of complaining ! And I wasn’t going to stop at the size problem, so this one is going to be a full-on, Grease-level, makeover, including changing the color (and that finish does not want to be painted, let me tell you!) and changing the pulls.
Now that will have to wait a little bit for now because it’s going to be a pretty time-consuming DIY and I need to plan ahead.

Now that you’ve met, here’s our family portrait, in “living room mode”.

Okay I get it, it’s a terrible family portrait. There’s crap everywhere, and we can’t even see the cute little rug because of a giant annoying yoga mat ! I’ll do sooo much better at the end of the week, promise ! But as you can see, it’s coming along, however slowly. I’m glad to see some exotic furniture in here everyday and it also made me realize I need more wood tones in my decor.

As a tiny bonus, here’s a looksie at the beginning of a discoball “collection”, if you will. I’ve got some ideas, but so far, what a beaut’ !

Now, following last week’s « New Year, More Me » post, I decided to re-think some of my original ideas, as one does.
Leaving the « non-wallpapered walls » of the living room white seemed like the way to go in 2016. Playing it safe(-ish) and letting « the eye rest » according to decor guidelines that I-don’t-know-who made up. But it’s 2017 now and it’s all « no-holds barred » up in here, so screw it !
I realized I don’t want white walls, and who’s to tell me I can’t paint the wall in a bright blue shade ! No-one that’s who. Yeah… You hear that, imaginary decor person in my head. (What ?)

So I tried it out on Photoshop and behold ! Joy and happiness, and everything right with the world. (…Too much ?) I’m not even that much of a “blue” person – apart from the ocean or the sky -, my first instinct for picking colors always goes more towards the pinks/oranges & purples of the world, but for some reason, it had to be blue !

As soon as I get my hands on the perfect shade I’m going to go for it ! That might be by the end of the week so keep an eye out !
I can’t wait to see what it looks like !

My philosophy on paint is simple : Don’t like it ? You can always cover it up.
There’s no need to be scared to try bold colors, it’s just a little paint. I’m always excited to try out one of my ideas on a wall, and see if it works, because most of the time it does. Maybe you bought something that turns out to be too bold, but you try it anyway because, well, you opened it and turns out it’s great ! And it pushed you to be bolder.

I have never felt that kind of happiness from opening white paint, let me tell you. But buying a sample you find gorgeous, let’s say a cotton candy pink, even though you had no plans for a pink wall in your future, and applying it on a wall, just to see what it looks like, that leap feels awesome ! Because it’s about listening to yourself. If you’re eyeing that pink color, then there’s a reason, and what’s stopping you ?! I guess what I’m saying (in a very clunky way I might add), is try new things !

Besides, paint is cheap. Worst case, you lost a few hours, best case : happy new wall !
And also, it might just be me, but I looove to paint walls, and trim, and pretty much everything. It’s like meditation to me. I might be the only one though… what a weirdo.

Anyway to recap, lots to do, as always, and not as much time as I’d like, but at least things are finally moving and I’m very glad to be bringing you some progress !

I seem to only have two speeds anyway : snail-crawl and hyper-speed so I’m going to try to change that !

I am going to be on vacation next week so there’ll be no new posts, but I’ll try to update you on the wall before I leave ! I’m off to Norway to see the Northern Lights, (I know you hate me right now) and get my mind blown clean off. There should be no shortage of inspiration from Mother Nature herself so I hope to come back refreshed and full of ideas and great new color palettes. I’ll be bringing you back some pictures for your own inspiration !

In the meantime have a great day, the good news is it’s Wednesday, and like Bon Jovi always said, “we’re half-way there” !
See you all in a few days for a bonus post !

Thoughts for the New Year

January 9, 2017

Hi everyone !

My apologies for being suspiciously absent since we rang in the new year, but I’ve been indulging in some much appreciated extra holiday time! Now before you start boo-ing me, you can rest assured that Karma saw me, of course, and I got sick pretty much right away and have been slowly dying for weeks now, so I didn’t get to enjoy it.
But today I can proudly say I can finally almost breathe from both nostrils so I’m back, baby!

As I mentioned in my last post of 2016, I just couldn’t wait for 2017.
Last year was (mostly) hard and crappy and sad so I put a lot of hope on this one.
Yes, maybe too much, and I know it’s kinda asking for trouble, but I’m rolling the dice.
George Michael told me « I gotta faith » and I’m pretty sure he was talking about 2017 the whole time, (think about it).

Last year I started sharing with you the making-over of my tiny apartment, even though progress has been pretty slow because I’ve been working on other projects at the same time. Well, at the end of 2016 I realized something : this apartment is the only real (now not-so) blank canvas I have, and not using it to experiment with my style as much as I can is a total waste ! Yes, my new wallpaper is making me very happy, and bringing some much needed interest to the walls, but I need crazier and funner elements to play both with it and against it, more color, and boldness, more… unexpected !

So over the break, I was brainstorming the next changes in store : the entryway, the office space, etc, and decided to get a jump start on ideas for the “gallery wall” for the living room. I was attracted to gallery walls as soon as they started popping up everywhere. I think it’s a trend that’s here to stay. I was an Art major and have always had a soft spot for it and gallery walls perfectly fit with my shameless maximalist way of life : fill your home with as much art as your eyes can take, same as books.
So naturally I went right to my favorite site for cool unexpected art (that supports artists): Society6.
I know I mentioned them a few times here, as I already own a few pieces, and yes, it’s mostly because I’ve found my people over there, but it’s also because it’s affordable and I’m pretty broke.
If you can afford some pricier stuff though, check out places like Minted, 20×200, The Tappan Collective, Eyes on Walls, and Artspace.

I started saving prints I liked on Pinterest and ended up with over a 100 pieces on the « I can’t live without » list. Oops.
So the « gallery wall » extended to « every available surface in the apartment» and that’s how I realized my main obsession for the year was going to be art.
And I do mean obsession, apparently I have no discernable spectrum of emotions, just two levels : indifference and obsession.
Anyway, things are about to get weiiird !

This new vision in my head of my home covered in those wonderful prints and pictures made me positively giddy ! I know I need that daily : words, pictures, reminders to have fun, breathe, enjoy, dance, create. I have an inspiration board over my desk of course, always have, and I’ve been known to have an inspiration …. well, wall :

I know, crazy pants.

So yeah, I take that stuff pretty seriously.
And to me that has always been the power of art : it breeds creativity.

This little journey in my mind led me here: this year, no resolutions. I probably won’t workout as much as I wanted to anyway, or eat as well as I should, as usual, so instead of making a whole list of things I’m going to fall short of once again, I’m going for a theme :
« Creativity » .
This year is going to be about trying to be creative in all things, for my projects and for myself.
No guidelines, just letting it flow and not putting any restrictions on it. And not being afraid of where it leads.

For my home that means more sewing, painting, dyeing things, even making my own neon sign (wuuuut?!).
And for my life : making music, art, movement, … sky’s the limit.

And I want you to try it with me.

I want you to look around your home with a fresh eye, and write down every idea that comes to you over time, however wild, however different. It may not stick but you need to be open to it and let the ideas come. And with time, through all the possibilities, you will end up with a clear preference.

Maybe you saw a bright pink wall in a magazine you keep coming back to, or a mustard yellow couch, or a crazy chandelier you can’t stop dreaming about but you’re afraid it might be « too much ».
You need to know and remind yourself that nothing you love will ever clash with your decor.
Nothing that makes you happy will look “out of place”. Don’t be afraid to be bold and to be you.

So here we are, January 2017. I’m not preaching « new year, new me », instead I’m going to go with « new year, more me ».
Do more of what makes you happy. Be yourself, be bold, be weird, and be creative, always.

Let’s all kick ass this year and show the world who we really are !
A happy and bright new year to you all !

Making Over Those Pesky White Walls

December 22, 2016

Hi all,

I know, I’m very late ! Between X-mas preparations and this latest project, I was a little overwhelmed to get to my deadline on Monday. I wanted to close the year on some big news from my apartment so I gave myself a few more days in order to bring you the last makeover of 2016 !

I have the terribly annoying tendency to get an idea in my head – that needs to be executed right away like my life depends on it – when I’m already overwhelmed with many other things. It’s like procrastinating in reverse ….

I’ve been juggling projects and had decided to put off the wall makeover for January so I could get some rest. So of course, once I added some more onto my plate, like having to run around all over Paris looking for presents, that’s when my brain decided (without me), “let’s makeover the walls now”.

Because lots of work + carrying bags and bags of presents + falling asleep as soon as I get home apparently = perfect time to put up some wallpaper !

Now that it’s done, I’m glad I did it though. Sure I’m leaving and won’t spend any time at home until said January, but crazy is as crazy does … I had to do, folks. Now, even though I won’t be here, honestly it feels amazing to fill this empty white space ! Unfortunately the weather has been super crappy this week in Paris so these pictures are not so great, but I’ll give you guys a better look in the new year. Oh, how everything will be better in the new year …

So for this “wallpaper” project, I decided to make over two opposite walls. The window wall :

And the closet wall :

I haven’t talked about this side in a while, but basically there are two closets on this wall, and the three, smaller, middle panels are hiding a Murphy bed. I love the built-in bookshelf at the end there but it has weird proportions (very deep shelves) so I’ve yet to master them to my liking. I know I’ll paint or wallpaper them too later on, in a contrasting pattern or color.

So this wall is very functional, but I’m not crazy about the look of all those closet doors. At first I was inspired to make them classier : there’s a lot of cool doors DIYs on Pinterest I could have tried, particularly this great one from PopSugar. But at the end of the day, as much as I love those ideas, I also wanted to cover it all up and make the doors “disappear”.

Now it’s not the most original pattern I could’ve chosen, but I’ve been dreaming of doing this in all of my previous apartments, so I finally went for it and got my NYC on with red brick wallpaper !

I got a sample to try it out, and I was particularly happy with the result next to the red sofa !

Now let me remind you, this is a rental and while I will paint any wall without hesitation, wallpapering is a whole different ballgame. It’s a pain to remove, and red brick is definitely not going to please everyone who comes in after me. So I did some research. Temporary wallpaper is very much a thing but it’s still in its infancy. I read both great reviews and really terrible ones, most of the brands I found were very expensive, or the shipping rates from the US were insane, and to top it all off, there was no brick ones I liked. I think it’s a great solution but it must depend heavily on the surface to which it’s applied. I have matte finish on my walls and everything sticks to it so I felt like it was too much of a gamble.

Meanwhile, in Paris, in my favorite home depot store, I found the perfect one, and pretty cheap too. So I decided to wing it and use my brain to come up with a solution (since then of course, I’ve seen found people who used the same technique because I ain’t no genius!). I purchased a bunch of wallpaper at 16$ a roll, some frog tape and double sided tape, and got to work.

The width of the roll is a little smaller than my door so I had some fun cutting to do on … Every. Single. Door. Grr.

On the doors, I made a grid of frog tape to make sure the paper was secured in enough places. (Made over at night of course, to insure perfect pictures!)

Then I rolled out the wallpaper from the top, making sure to flatten it on every spot of the double-sided tape. It’s a pretty simple procedure, just very, very time consuming.

Finally some natural light but what a mess ! I loved doing the little wall portion on the right to really frame the built-in shelves. It’s giving me a better sense of what to do with it !

Oh boy, more crap. Sorry guys ! Okay so hours of taping and cutting later, voilà ! Pretty good, right ? Now, I know you can spy a new friend : my very sexy headboard. I haven’t been home enough to cover its story and DIY, but I promise to talk about it next year !

And on the other side : ba-bam ! So this is my own version of temporary wallpaper. Like I said : I winged it, so I’m waiting to see how long it’ll hold, if summer heat will make the tape melt, and all those fun adventures that await the next few months ! I’ll keep an eye on it but so far, it looks pretty – for lack of a better word – “sturdy”.

The last thing I showed you was the shelves, so here’s a little before and after :

It feels soooo good to have some color and pattern in this place finally ! I only did these two walls because the other two have their own special purposes. Above the desk I have big cork boards to put up inspiration and work stuff, so visually it already takes a lot of space, and on the opposite one I’ll put up some art so I left it blank for now. The wall with all the closets can’t hold any heavy decor because the doors are so thin, so it was a perfect candidate for some pattern.

I’m also so freaking glad to finally see bricks when I come home ! I’ve been trying to trick my brain into thinking I live in NYC  for years so this will help !

Alright my peeps, this is the final post for 2016 as I am officially exhausted and Christmas isn’t even here yet. This year has kicked my ass and I can’t wait for 2017, but at least I’m ending on a high-note, with red brick on my walls ! Hooray for small victories !

Enjoy the holidays with your loved ones, and get extra crazy on New Year’s, we deserved it. See ya in 2017 !
